Wash Against Waste is an environmentally friendly alternative to “disposable” crockery and cutlery that reduces waste, is easy to use, hygienic and saves money.
What is Wash Against Waste?
Wash Against Waste is a trailer and kit with everything needed to service a festival. It includes hundreds of plates, bowls, cups and cutlery as well as urns, tea towels, sponges, aprons, buckets, trolleys, wash tubs and trestle tables. All you need is people, power, water and maybe a tent for shelter.
Volunteers are needed to distribute clean items, collect dirty items and wash. The wash process has four stages: pre-wash, wash with detergent, rinse and a final sterilising rinse. SLF has found that WAW can be run by about 4 to 8 people
What are the Environmental Benefits?
Waste in the form of “disposable” food containers is drastically reduced. Water is also conserved using a 4-stage process.
To be effective, you do need to ensure that the food and drink vendors understand that “disposable” items are not to be used. They may use WAW items or bring their own items which can be washed by WAW.
History
WAW was developed in 2000 by People for Environment Protection, a community group based in Eltham. It was later managed by Northern Regional Waste Management Group. In 2006 NRWMG became part of the Metropolitan Waste Management Group and passed the WAW trailer over to the Sustainable Living Foundation (SLF). SLF has used WAW at six Sustainable Living Festivals since 2001 and is keen to see it used by more community groups more often.
