Recently the Department of Environment, Water, Heritage and the Arts (DEWHA) launched a new program aiming to assist home owners and renters in making their homes more energy and water efficient. Assessments are performed by a trained and accredited assessor, take about 90 mins, and are free of charge.

SLF member, Lari Nicholls, is enjoying her new role as an independent Home Sustainability Assessor for the program.

Lari says,

'There are many things, some of which are easy and inexpensive, which can be done to make the home more comfortable and efficient. Some homes I visit are fantastic demonstrations of home sustainability in practice. I love learning from householders experience, seeing their solutions working, and then passing this knowledge on to other households.'

DEWHA is funding 360,000 free Home Sustainability Assessments across Australia. Householders receive a written assessment report which creates eligibility for DEWHA's 'Green Loan' which provides up to $10,000 for 4 years Interest Free to implement energy and water efficiency changes to the home. There is no obligation to access the 'Green Loan'. Many people just take the  opportunity to gather tips about improving the home environmental footprint.

Lari is keen to share home sustainability ideas while helping raise some funds for SLF. She will donate $30 to SLF for each assessment that she does for an SLF member,  relative, neighbour, friend, workmate etc. This is a great opportunity to help boost SLF's funds and promote home sustainability actions. How many people do you know who could benefit from a free Home Sustainability Assessment?

Lari usually assesses homes in the inner and northern region of Melbourne. However, when two or more homes in the same area would like an assessment on the same day, this can be arranged. If you would like to participate, contact Lari directly (Phone: 0400 062 927 Email: larissa.nicholls@gmail.com) and/or contact the SLF office.
