The Victorian Government announced in May 2006 it will spend $13m/year on cycling and walking facilities in Melbourne. It has also committed a further $16m over four years to improve local access by walking and cycling and $30m over ten years to support sustainable travel. Anthony and Alice will outline their department’s plans for walking cycling and answer questions from the audience.

Anthony Barton, Alice Woodruff and Frank Fisher

Alice Woodruff completed a Bachelor of Science (Hons) at the Australian National University with a focus on environmental management and urban geography and has worked in a range of environmental policy and planning positions for the Australian Government and overseas. In moving to Melbourne in 2002, Alice changed direction from coastal planning to strategic transport planning. Until recently Alice managed the TravelSmart Communities program, which uses voluntary travel behaviour change methods to maximise sustainable travel. Now Alice manages programs within the newly formed Walking and Cycling branch of the Department to support walking, cycling and public transport as modes of transport. Cycling is Alice’s most common form of transport.

Frank lectures in Sustainability at Swinburne University of Technology and is the author of "Response Ability". He is a committed cyclist who can explain the benefits of Bike-Rail around Melbourne as against the DODO (driver only, driver owned) transport used by many.

Anthony Barton has been at VicRoads for 22 years working on road construction, maintenance projects and commercial vehicle operations. Currently, Anthony is the Manager - Bicycle and Pedestrian Programs and has been involved in the Bicycle Program almost 8 years. His preference is for road cycling, with regular rides of 100km or more - not so much a commuter cyclist. He is currently studying a Masters in Traffic and Transport at Monash University. Anthony has a strong background in Exercise and Sports Sciences as an aerobic instructor, personal trainer and gym owner. Cycling and walking brings together the interest in exercise and health and transportation.
