Surfusion

Fri 16th | 3:00pm - 4:00pm
Main screen

hosted by | Surfusion
A fusion of musical performance and surf/ coastal nature films by coastal film-makers. This performance will highlight sustainable connections between humans and nature through the art of surfing. The performance will feature the musicianship of Surfusion and the beautiful films of Peter Kirkhouse. Together, this performance of film and music will aim to address the festival theme in a way that conveys human interaction with the ocean and nature through the full immersion that occurs when surfing in the ocean. The film and music are centred on the ocean and beaches along Victoria's Surf Coast. Song lyrics are based on the spiritual connections that occur when surfers immerse themselves in the ocean, whilst the film show the beauty of the Shipwreck Coast near the Twelve Apostles and Port Campbell.

Surfusion
Born out of the surf of Bells Beach, Surfusion is a band of surfer-musicians who are as passionate about their music as their surfing. Having formed three years ago, the band have played a slew of gigs along the Surf Coast of Victoria, building up a reputation as an awesome live band, whether in a small cafe setting or in front of a festival crowd. Surfusion comprise Red C. Whyte on songwriting, guitar and vocals (see redwhyte.com), Del Reis on 6 stringed bass and Joe Ham on drums and percussion. All members surf regularly: some more than others... Red surfed every single day of 2004, and regularly rides the water mountains of Two Mile, Massacres and Winki Pop. Del grew up in Rio de Janiero riding waves off Copacobana, and Joe is in his element surfing the longboard off Bells Beach. Surfusion is backed by many years of playing experience of the three band members. Members have played in influential bands such as The Red Whyte trio, Inked Factor, Compost and The Rio de Janiero All Stars. They have toured several times to Byron Bay, three surfing gigs to King Island and have played the Rip Curl Pro Bells Beach and Queenscliffe Music Festivals. The band plays what they call Psychedelic Surf-Jazz... a heady mix of psychedelic jazz funk heavily influenced by greats of the 60's and 70's. The music has a strong theme of connection to nature through the soul-soothing art of surfing. All songs are originals written by Red and arranged by the band. Live gigs feature a lot of improvisation and 'tuning' of the music towards the vibe of the crowd. What makes it 'Surf Music' is the consistent reference to the surfing lifestyle in the lyrics and the sometimes eerie musical trips taken by the band in live performances.
