The Westside CRAG presentation will cover the following: *An overview of climate science. Our framework for rationing carbon draws heavily on Climate Code Red's analysis of the latest climate science and the corresponding implications for greenhouse gas emissions.
*An overview of our journey in becoming energy literate and calculating and reducing our greenhouse gas emissions.
*Ideas for renters and home owners on how to tackle reducing emissions.
Neesh Wray & Shaun Murray
Neesh and Shaun are both part-time instrumental music teachers at Northcote High School. The rest of the time they are engaging in environmental and social justice activism, including involvement with the Friends of the Earth Climate Justice campaign, the Ethical Consumer Group, the Western Urban Harvest Swap Meet and of course, Westside CRAG. In their spare time, Neesh and Shaun are transforming their garden into a fruit and vegetable forest.
The idea for starting CRAG (Carbon Rationing Action Group) came from our involvement with Friends of the Earth's Climate Justice Collective and our association with David Spratt, the co-author of Climate Code Red: The case for a sustainability emergency. David also has a website called Carbon Equity which has information about the CRAGs movement which originated in the UK and links to the Australian groups. We launched the Westside CRAG in March at a forum organised by the Inner West Greens. Since then we've held monthly meetings at our house in Yarraville with anywhere from three to twelve people attending. At each meeting we calculate someone's direct household emissions from electricity, gas, petrol and flights and then discuss reduction strategies. We share our own experiences and ideas for reducing our emissions with those who attend the meetings, discussing behaviour change and capital investments (small and large). We also discuss a different theme such as embodied emissions in red meat and dairy consumption.
