interactive construction from recycled junk mail

This art project focuses on passing the message of sustainable living on to our next generation. Using the Japanese art form of origami the festival visitor will be assisted in creating  paper cranes from recycled junk mail -  in 5 sessions throughout the festival period . On each paper crane the participants will write a message about sustainability to exchange idea’s and thinking.

The Japanese custom is, that if a person folded 1000 cranes, they would be granted one wish. I propose a collaborative activity to create 1000 cranes. After folding the cranes will be constructed into a sculptural form.

The Japanese people have always been very careful not to waste anything. They have always saved even the tiniest scraps of paper and used them for folding origami models. We can follow this example and making beautiful art works from Junk Mail. The directions of how to make cranes were taught to each generation. This form of art became part of the cultural heritage of the Japanese people.
