A look at local and international programs and strategies addressing the re-education and re-localisation of food production. The featured programs are creating sustainable food systems that allow people to take back control over what they eat, how it’s grown and how it’s prepared. These 'on the ground’ stories demonstrate re-localisation in action and reflect on the issues of bridging social and environmental justice in relation to community food security.
Peta Christensen
Peta Christensen has worked with Cultivating Community since 2000 in school gardens, community gardens and fresh food market projects. In 2004 Peta was awarded a Churchill Fellowship to explore urban agriculture and food security projects overseas and is currently working on developing a more sustainable and equitable food system for the City of Yarra.
‘Cultivating Community’ is a not-for-profit organisation that has grown out of supporting community garden projects in inner-city public housing estates. It has evolved into an organisation promoting and supporting the development of food security and urban agriculture projects across the entire community. Cultivating Community is currently working with 20 community garden projects across Melbourne’s public housing sector, 6 school kitchen gardens and 2 community fresh food markets. Our work is based around encouraging the development of sustainable agricultural food systems in urban areas and promoting the cultural richness of food, plants and people through community food projects. Cultivating Community is committed to grass roots community development and is working alongside public housing residents to achieve long term goals of tenant empowerment and self management for the community garden projects.
