Why does food account for 37% of our ecofootprint and more greenhouse emissions than personal transport? By growing fresh organic vegetables and composting organic waste we can produce oxygen and sequester carbon in our soils while reducing our eco-footprint, erosion, greenhouse emissions and water used to produce our food. Home food gardening may be the single most important environmental contribution we can make. Most sustainability choices ask you to give something up, but food gardening offers not just the taste of the freshest possible organic food, but the improved nutrition and living enzymes are great for the health of our mind and our body. It saves money while offering a great way to relax and unwind, or spend time with friends and family. It allows us to feel more connected to nature, and to know the history of the food we eat, and in doing so gain some sense of control over our lives.

Permablitz Melbourne promotes and facilitates one-day backyard makeovers incorporating edible landscaping and permaculture design. These permablitz events include shared food, free educational workshops and good cheer. Anyone is welcome, no special skills are required. The network is based on volunteer reciprocity, such that if you come to three or so permablitz events, Permablitz Melbourne can help facilitate a blitz at your house, and work with you on design. Our ultimate aim is to make the suburbs edible enough that should food become unaffordable we don't even notice.
