Introduction of biopolymers as an alternative packaging solution that is breaking into the Australian Market. _ Environmental benefits of biopolymer production – less energy, less carbon emissions. _ Greater end of life options of biopolymer (incineration or commercial composting). _ What is currently available using biopolymer packaging _ The scope for biopolymer usage (food packaging, disposal cutlery, etc). A closer look at waste: Introduce Commercial Composting Plastics: _ There is a place for plastics, long life stability of plastics e.g Tupperware. _ Dispelling the ‘7’ other recycling category for biopolymers. Call to actions: _ Outline what you can do to get on this journey _ Potential to ‘sell’ organic compost back to farmers to reduce reliance on synthetic fertilisers. _ The availability in SA but lack of infrastructure in Vic.

Richard Paterson
After leading a successful career in agriculture, Richard joined the family’s spring water business in 2002. Over the past 3 years Richard has been working on a more environmentally friendly and sustainable alternative to PET plastics for the packaging of bottled water. This has led to the development of Cool Change Natural Spring Water, the first beverage in Australia to be packaged in a bottle made from plants (and whose production process is certified carbon neutral). Richard is now involved in promoting the establishment of commercial food waste composting facilities and is a key driver pushing the move towards more sustainable packaging with in the fast moving consumer goods industry.
Cool Change Natural Spring Water (Cool Change) is Australia’s leader in sustainable bottled beverages. Cool Change Natural Spring Water is proud to introduce Australia’s first drink (water) packaged in a bottle made from plants. Rather than deriving a polymer (plastic) from oil products, Cool Change Natural Spring Water bottles are made using IngeoTM PLA, derived from annually renewable sources (plants). In addition to the packaging, Cool Change Natural Spring Water as a business have considered all aspects of the business to ensure the carbon footprint is minimised by reducing energy usage then offsetting any green house emissions that have been created, making Cool Change Natural Spring Water the first water in Australia to have a carbon neutral production process (certified by Carbon Reduction Institute).
