Ocean Outfalls - where all of Melbourne's water went.

hosted by | Clean Ocean Foundation Inc.
The Clean Ocean Foundation exists to raise awareness of the environmental devastation of Gunnamatta Beach in the Mornington Peninsula National Park, where 42% of Melbourne's wastewater is dumped only 20 metres from the shoreline of a once pristine coastal environment. Every day a billion litres of wastewater is still being discharged into Port Phillip Bay and Bass Strait without being recycled. The Department of the Environment and Water Resources reported only 6.7% of Victoria's 448 GL yearly discharge was being recycled in 2001-2002. Yet since then, no large scale water recycling initiatives have gone beyond the business case or feasibility study stage. Recycling the water currently discharged at Gunnamatta would make over 430 million litres available for re-use everyday in the Melbourne region. This is also far cheaper and far less energy hungry than large scale desalination. The Foundation will reveal the truth behind Melbourne's water situation and offer solutions that will benefit the community, economy and environment. The rest is up to you.
