Mum's and Dad's Emission Free Taxi

Sun 17th February 08 | 11:00am - 12:00pm
Design tent

hosted by | Darebin BUG
Come along to hear how your family can significantly reduce its greenhouse gas emissions, save time, money, get fit and have a great time. Just because you have kids doesn't mean you have to drive a car. Give the car a rest, let the planet take a breath and jump on a bike. It's something the whole family can do together. Hear the stories of two mums and their kids, check out their wheels, hear about the great places they've been, and how they got there. You'll find out about a bike-riding group especially for families with young kids whose motto is "No one is too slow; we're always happy to stop for a rest, play, nappy change, breastfeed or until a tantrum is over."

Kathy Brunning & Karen Webster

Kathy Brunning: Mum to Lucas, 6, and Callum, 3, Kathy's commitment to reducing her carbon footprint arose out of concern for her children's future. Kathy took to riding to work a number of years ago and soon became hooked. She co-founded the Darebin Bicycle User Group (BUG) in 2000 to advocate for better facilities for cyclists in Darebin. She soon realised there was no point lobbying if no one was riding, and started some of Darebin BUG's rides that continue today: weekly beginners and training rides and monthly rides to the Farmer's Market at the Collingwood Children’s Farm. Qualified as a Community Development Worker and Bike Ed. instructor, Kathy works part-time at the Cycling Promotion Fund and is passionate about active transport. In addition to organising and leading Darebin BUG's Mums (& Dads) on Bikes rides, she is one of the drivers of a Walking School Bus to her eldest son's school. Kathy is also a volunteer trainer with Jika Jika Community Centre in Northcote, teaching adults to ride bicycles from scratch. Kathy's other passion is gardening. When not on her bike, she can often be found pottering around in her garden.

Karen Webster is mum to Jesse, 13 months. She also has been a keen cycling commuter since 1999. Although she does not live in Darebin (yet) she joined Darebin BUG when Jesse was 7 months and ready to ride. Karen has worked mainly in the travel industry and has volunteered and worked with Bicycle Victoria. Currently she works some evening shifts at the Arts Centre. This leaves her days free for Jesse, cycling, swimming, and other projects. One of her other passions is encouraging Mums to use cloth nappies.
