Composting

Compost is the end product of the decomposition of organic matter. Some examples of organic matter for events include food scraps, biodegradable food packaging and green waste. Composting is the process of converting organic matter into soil that is high in nutrients. Subsequently, after treatment, this compost can be used for domestic purposes such as mulch, compost or in a worm farm.

Currently, it is rare that venues already promote composting on their sites with separate waste streams for composting. However, there are simple systems that can be setup on a temporary basis for events to ensure that all compostable waste during an event is managed appropriately.

To make the most of the composting system, event organizers can also look to promote and educate event attendees to separate compostable materials from general waste when possible.
