Cultural Protocol

Inclusivity is an important aspect to achieving social sustainability; particularly at community events. To help achieve this, events should be looking to ensure that any language barriers between event organizers or with the attendees are overcome to achieve sustainable actions effectively and efficiently. A couple of ways to do this include:

  • having a diverse range of staff & volunteers who can speak a variety of languages
  • having signs and information that are interpreted into multiple languages (particular those which are considered popular within the local community)

To further emphasise your event's commitment to social sustainability, further research into popular local cultures and groups' customs may be worth noting and communicating this to all involved. This may include:

  • welcome to the country ceremony to international and other attendees by pointing out the history of the site where the event is held
  • noting the customs of groups which may be offended by certain aspects of your event

Be sure to make use of local councils and community groups to get the best information about cultural protocol for your event.
