On-site camping is a common form of accommodation for many events. To help lower the impact from camping by event visitors, a camping kit can be given to attendees to help them to mimise their impact during the course of an event.
Typically, a camping kit would focus primarily on promoting recycling comprising a biodegradable compost bag for food scraps; a clear bag for recyclables such as plastic bottles, cans and cardboard, and a normal black bin bag for other non-recyclable waste. The kits can also provide attendees with a checklist of sustainable actions to keep in mind during the event. Other sustainable options for possible inclusion are multiple-use cups so any beverages can be served from bulk packaging and not from single use containers. Biodegradable toiletries, cutlery and even biodegradable tents are also a good way to promote sustainability at an event if resources permit.
Set up 'litter exchanges' in the campgrounds where people can exchange their bags for new ones and ensure that it is well-managed and clearly identifiable.
And, depending on the nature of the event and whether or not unwanted tents are left behind afterwards, it may be worthwhile contacting some local charities to make sure that unwanted tents themselves can be recycled and put to good use.
