WE ARE STANDING HERE TO FIGHT AND PROTECT EVERYTHING THAT WE LOVE

Displaying a wisdom far beyond his years, Xiuhtezcatl Martinez has been speaking out for the planet since the tender age of six. Today, still a teenager, his extraordinary eloquence has moved audiences to take up the fight against climate change. He has addressed world leaders at the United Nations as well as thousands of inspired young people across many continents.

Xiuhtezcatl is spreading his message about the climate emergency. He is compelled to stand up and speak out for his peers—whom he refers to as not just tomorrow’s leaders but leaders of today. Xiuhtezcatl is leading a landmark lawsuit against the Federal U.S. Government for inaction on climate change and its impact on his and future generations.

Xiuhtezcatl made headlines around the world when he stood before the UN Earth Summit in 2015. Opening his statement in Nahuatl, he went on with the fluency of a spoken word poet to stress the immediacy of climate change, its impact as an issue of human rights, and to lambast politicians for over 20 years of inaction. “We have to remember, we are all indigenous to this earth and that we are all connected”, he urged the delegates. “We are being called upon to use our courage, our innovation, our creativity and our passion to bring forth a new world.”

In 2017, Xiuhtezcatl joins the Festival for a series of special events. Expect to be inspired, challenged and entertained by this impassioned young man.

Xiuhtezcatl will also appear at The Factory Theatre in Sydney on Sunday 12 February at 6.30pm – bookings via ThinkInc

“People will look at this generation as really the generation that was able to overcome one of the greatest issues that humanity has ever been faced with.”
