Green Fest is the first of four 2022 activities that will be staged and co-hosted by Food Is Free Inc. and Ballarat Action Climate Coop.
Focussing on climate change issues, gardening, and sustainability, Green Fest is an opportunity to meet fellow Ballarat community groups advocating climate change.
The day’s festivities will include information stalls, markets, a clothes and book swap, outdoor creative and environmental workshops, music and more.
The aim of this event is to create awareness about local sustainability projects, build community connections, put climate more on everyone’s agenda, and increase support for climate action.
Food Is Free Inc. is a grassroots, community-led not-for-profit benefitting all Ballarat citizens focusing on those experiencing disadvantage with a core purpose of assisting food security, plus community cohesion/inclusion. Food Is Free Inc is operating several different enterprises in the local area. Food Is Free Laneway helps people solve their food waste issues, whilst assisting those people living with food insecurity within our community. Visitors wander through the Laneway to access free fresh food (fruit, vegetables & herbs) donated from Food Is Free Green Space, plus donations of food from local gardens 24/7. Food Is Free delivers a vital educational element with signage on how to grow your own food, plus free seeds & seedlings for persons to take with them to start their own garden for empowerment and self-sufficiency. Food Is Free Green Space’s purpose-built outdoor classroom with over 30 garden beds aimed at-risk/marginalised persons, helps them grow food whilst learning gardening skills. General public workshops are also hosted in the space for the wider community to benefit. Both sites enjoy up to 100 daily visitors during peak times and are a very much loved and embraced part of Ballarat’s community. Food Is Free is 100% volunteer-led.
