So, you think you can go self-sufficient? A practical workshop to help plan and design your dream home.

Dreaming of your own off-grid property? Don’t know what kind of land to find, or what you’ll need to get going? Then this is the workshop for you!

This is an interactive and creative workshop that will delve into your ideas and dreams about off-grid living and self-sufficiency. The event will investigate a range of issues, hurdles, and elements in practice, with real-life examples.

The aim of this event is to understand what it means to become self-sufficient, learn about planning and regulations, and understand how to organise your own build.

See below for details of a Castlemaine Natural Building Tour in March 2023.

Dr. Rachel Goldlust is an environmental historian, public speaker, writer, academic, town planner, and educator on all things off-grid. Rachel specialises in a wide variety of historical research, green and natural building projects, and running educational seminars. She has been teaching self-sufficiency for beginners for several years at CERES Environment Park in Melbourne and, more recently, several online workshops trying to help people visualise and move forward with their dreams.

Castlemaine has a long proud history of owner-built earth houses and this tour will allow you to see, feel and touch some of them! If you’ve ever wanted to visit some well-designed, passive solar, natural material houses that work in all seasons, come jump on the tour bus with us and you can visit 3 local natural builds, meet those who made them and ask all your owner building and passive design questions. The tour is guided by an experienced environmental builder who can help answer your questions and, at each location, there will be time to chat with the owners about their processes, design constraints, budgets, and logistics.
