About 90% of the lighters used in the creation of this installation have been picked up throughout Melbourne’s creeks and rivers. Last estimate, Les reckon’s he had about nine thousand.
“If I were collecting every comb, I would have about an additional four thousand plastic waste items. Or if I were collecting every babies’ dummy, I would have about twelve hundred… or every plastic bottle, a few million. Some say I’m doing an amazing job, helping to clean up the planet. For me, this amounts to an insignificant contribution. My main motivation and intention is to raise awareness by using the arts’ ability to provoke questions around the age of the disposable.”
