Friday February 13th marks one year since the National Apology to the Stolen Generation and the Koorie Night Market would like to invite you to the Northcote Town Hall to help celebrate the anniversary.
The Koorie Night Market brings together leading artists, musicians and in a festival atmosphere. Decembers market attracted 2, 000 people and 40 stallholders offering art, artefacts, clothing, food and jewellery.
The musical line up for the February market is a show stopper featuring the energetic, and upbeat Jarrah, acclaimed composer, guitarist, singer and didgeridoo player Joe Geia – famous for his song "Yil Lull" and his didgeridoo playing on Goanna’s 1982 hit “Solid Rock”, Singer songwriters Brian Morley and Monica Weightman.
To coincide with the apology Stolen Generation Victoria will be screening the film the "The Apology" for free in the Town Hall during the market.
The anniversary of the apology also coincides with the recent release of Stolen Generations Victoria’s timely report, Unfinished Business. Unfinished Business is the result of intense consultation with members of the Stolen Generations throughout Victoria and details the current and ongoing needs of those members of the community.
12 recommendations are made in the report as to what State and Federal governments can do to assist members of the Stolen Generations in their journey of healing. Interestingly, these recent recommendations echo the original 54 recommendations made in 1997’s Bringing Them Home report, many of which have not been implemented.
Stolen Generations Victoria hope that the anniversary of the apology will see renewed government commitment to assist members of the Stolen Generations, and a reinvigorated effort by the community to participate in sustainable reconciliation.
The Koorie Night market is brought to you by Koorie Night Market Incorporated, a newly formed majority Indigenous controlled organisation . Project partners include Darebin Council, the Darebin Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Community Council (DATSIC), community organisations, stallholders, WISE Employment and the Darebin Enterprise Centre Ltd.
