‘Running on Empty’ takes an in-depth look at how urban communities in Cuba overcame the challenges and issues they faced as a result of the harsh economic conditions and the depletion of resources.

Through the course of the forum, experts from both the private and public sectors will examine the possible impacts on the Australian development industry and the urban lifestyle of tomorrow.

Presented through a range of case studies, scenarios and expert opinions, ‘running on empty’ will look at a range of real life issues and impacts on Australia’s development Industry and present a range of opportunities and solutions to combat these challenges.

Key note speaker, Dr Fernando Martirena
With a wealth of invaluable understanding of the development industry, Dr Martirena will share his experience of the Cuban oil crisis of the 1990’s. Along with his team, Dr Martirena developed a range of unique and innovative construction and community building and design techniques to help combat the crisis. His work in the building and development industry has been acclaimed globally, receiving the United Nations’ World Habitat Award for EcoMaterials in Social Housing Projects.

Andrew McNamara, Qld Minister for Sustainability, Climate Change and Innovation, features in Brisbane with a video address in Townsville.
