What is the Impact of Climate Change on the Biodiversity of Western Australia?

The Conservation Council of WA is organising a scientific forum to identify existing research on the impact of climate change on the terrestrial, aquatic and marine biodiversity of Western Australia.

Contributions are invited from the scientific community that will assist the forum in:

• Discovering published and unpublished scientific investigations that contain information on biological / ecological responses to climate change in the Western  Australian environment. These responses might include  observations on geographical re-distribution, range contraction, phenotypic  plasticity, micro-evolution or genetic change / evolution.

• Identifying long-term data sets that could potentially be interrogated for climate change - biodiversity trends.

• Making recommendations on a systematic program to monitor biodiversity responses to climate change including the validation of bio-climatic modeling.

It is intended that the forum will involve marine and terrestrial concurrent symposia.

The Conservation Council of WA proposes to coordinate the communication of the forum’s proceedings and
recommendations to decision-makers and the public. This could involve a scientific statement from the forum and the later development of printed material or public displays.

Date: Thursday, 5th of June (World Environment Day) 2008

Where:  The University Club, University of Western Australia.
