The Australian Electoral Commission (AEC) and triple j will ‘Rock Enrol’ across Australia, from Humpty Doo in the Northern Territory to Burnie in Tasmania, to spread the enrolment message to youth before the federal election this year.

Rock Enrol is a joint initiative between the AEC and triple j which aims to encourage young people to have their voice heard by enrolling to vote.

The artists who will be performing at the AWOL concert in Humpty Doo include Missy Higgins, Something for Kate, Blue King Brown, Zenith ASP and a local unearthed winner.

Missy Higgins said that it is vital that young people enrol to vote now or they may miss out.

“Voting is a key way of letting politicians know how you feel about issues – and you can’t vote if you’re not enrolled. So if you’re over 17, get on the roll now and make sure you’re ready to have your say when you turn 18,” Ms Higgins said.

Paul Dempsey from Something for Kate said it is essential for young people to get on the roll now.

“You need to ensure you are prepared and get on the roll now, before you miss out altogether,” said Mr Dempsey.

Rock Enrol staff will be on hand at the events to provide enrolment forms, check enrolment details and provide information for people wishing to enrol to vote.

Australian Electoral Commissioner, Mr Ian Campbell says, “Rock Enrol has travelled all around the country with music festivals and we are particularly excited about visiting regional areas to talk to young people about the importance of enrolling to vote.”

“Enrolling to vote is your democratic right, yet many 18 year olds are not enrolled. So, if you’re 18 or over, fill in an enrolment form today. You can also enrol if you’re 17, so you’re ready to vote when you are 18.”

“It is such a simple thing to do, and it is so important that young people have their say in elections. Rather than let others decide your future, make sure you are enrolled to vote and be heard,” said Mr Campbell.

Rock Enrol will travel to four regional locations as part of the AWOL tour including: Humpty Doo in the Northern Territory, 21 July; Karratha in Western Australia on 18 August; Innisfail in Queensland on 8 September; and Burnie in Tasmania on 13 October.

Enrolment forms can be found by visiting www.rockenrol.com.au or the AEC website www.aec.gov.au, phoning 13 23 26 or at any Australian Post Office and AEC Office. Visit the Rock Enrol website to also see other Australian Artists supporting the Rock Enrol initiative.
