RMIT is a multi-sector university of technology, design and enterprise with a mission to help shape the world through research, innovation, quality teaching and engagement. The University has a long- standing commitment to model institution-wide excellence across research, campuses, curriculum and community to shape a sustainable future.
In 2021, RMIT was ranked number two in the world for its efforts to reduce inequalities within and among countries (SDG 10) in the Times Higher Education University Impact Rankings. The University also ranked 3rd in the world for the overall ranking, designed to measure progress against the 17 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.
RMIT is a global leader in climate action, taking practical steps and innovative projects to become carbon neutral by 2030 and adapting to climate risks. The University also supports our local and international communities and partners to transition to a low carbon future. At the end of 2021, RMIT achieved over a 70% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions (from a 2007 baseline). This was realised by undertaking major campus energy efficiency upgrades, installing on-site renewables and leading two large-scale renewable energy purchasing groups with the City of Melbourne.
RMIT is proud to announce that as of 1 January 2021, the University has fully reduced the exposure of its Philanthropic Funds to carbon emissions and has excluded companies with fossil fuel reserves, as well as companies with significant involvement in fossil fuels from all investments. This marks the final step in achieving RMIT’s commitment to ensuring that its investment portfolio minimises activities that have a material impact on climate change, including involvement in fossil fuels as outlined in the RMIT Responsible Investment Principles.
At all times, RMIT aims to be a leader and champion for impactful change in the communities it serves and to support RMIT students to be change-agents for a better world.
